Large Polished Indian Volute Melon Shell for Sale, or Bailer Shells, Melo Melo. This large Indian Volute Melon Shell measures approximately 10-1/2 inches long and 7-1/4 inches wide.  It is an extremely large sea snail in the family Volutidae, the Volute.  Melo Melo are orange shells with a wide mouth opening and smooth shoulders and are without spines.  They were called Bailers because of their large mouth opening allowed for easy bailing of water out of canoes.  They also were referred to as Melons because of their resemblance to the fruit.
