Product Details
This is a real Common Snapping Turtle Shell measuring approximately 9-1/2 inches long and 8-3/4 inches wide.  Snapping turtle shells are used in Native American crafts and rattles are one of the items made out of them.  Our Common Snapping Turtle Shells are real (not replicas). The shell has some dried green algae on the top; Review all photos They will have natural imperfections from the turtle living in the water, fighting, being attacked by gators and other turtles and aging.

The Common snapping turtle is a large freshwater turtle. It is noted for its combative disposition when out of the water with its powerful beak-like jaws, and highly mobile head and neck (hence the specific name serpentina, meaning "snake-like"). These turtles have a rugged, muscular build with a ridged upper shell, although ridges tend to be more pronounced in younger individuals. The top of shell varies in color from black to light brown. Males in this species are larger than females.  The turtle's shell is covered by scales, called scutes.  Scutes are made up of keratin, the same substance human's nails are made of.  As a turtle grows, its scutes will often fall off.
