Snapping Turtle Shells

Snapping Turtle Shells
Real Snapping Turtle Shells for Sale individually and wholesale, top shell only, in sizes 8 inches up to 14 inches.  The meat of the snapping turtle is a traditional ingredient in turtle stews and soups.  Native Americans used their shells in ceremonies and celebrations. They made rattles out of them by filling the interior of the shell with corn, nuts and seeds.  Snapping turtles can be very vicious when removed from the water, but they become docile when placed back into the water.  The common snapping turtle ( (Chelydra serpentina) is a large freshwater turtle of the family Cheydridae.     It is noted for its combative disposition when out of the water with its powerful beak-like jaws, and highly mobile head and neck. The turtle's shell is covered by scales, called scutes.  Scutes are made up of keratin, the same substance that human's nails are made of.  As a turtle grows, its scutes will often fall off.  The shell of the snapping turtle is used in Native American crafts including making dream catchers, jewelry and art.  They are also collected.
